Why Los Blancos Have 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
