The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
