The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
