The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
