The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
