Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
