Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
