Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Future administration of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return none of us will be secure."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the hostages to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to end in return for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.

From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the dusk comes, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the remains of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city said two more victims had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff stated.
