Following a conclusive second-round vote, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Triumph

After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Agenda Built On Security and Immigration

Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and regard for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to combat rising crime and significantly restrict migration.

He repeatedly cited foreigners, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he issued an final demand for them to depart before the inauguration or face expulsion.

His policy ideas envisioned controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northern border.

Within a Regional Trend

Many commentators view Kast's success as fitting into a wider right-wing wave in Latin America, following this year's electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts also describe it as a part of the predictable swing of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Strong Majority

In spite of his sweeping electoral victory, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are counted together.

This political situation may complicate his plans, including a pledge to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a measure for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"There are several questions about how a Kast administration will look like that remain unclear because he has not detailed the way he will do them," commented a political analyst.

The expert added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts typical of the right. But where there is far less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse throughout the race."
