The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
