In the 1980s, she was seen in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as funny follow-up National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and appeared on the show Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.

The following year she was awarded another nomination for her performance in Rambling Rose that also featured Laura Dern.

“This was the picture that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew Laura and I to England for a royal premiere and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”

That decade featured performances in the comedy The Cemetery Club reuniting her with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, starring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy in which she portrayed the mother of Dern another time. Ladd also wrote and helmed the comedy film the movie Mrs Munck featuring Diane Ladd and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she noted. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. Actually, I am the sole female ever to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ However, I’m joking.”

Family Ties

She happened to be a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact throughout my life”.

During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and advised her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely once her daughter moved her to a new hospital.
